The most populated of Haiti's geographical departments, the West is home
to Port-au-Prince, the capital. Over the years, this coastal city has
spread from its initial waterfront location, expanding to the surrounding
mountains and into the plains to the north. Named after the French vessel
Le Prince, which set anchor in the early 1700's, Port-au-Prince is teeming
with life, music, art and commerce. Of interest downtown is the Cité de
l'Exposition or Bicentenaire which was remodeled for the 1949
bicentennial, the Iron Market, where one can find colorful artisan works,
and the Cathedral Notre-Dame. A few miles west of the commercial quarter,
the Champs de Mars is a large park dominated by the white, triple-domed
presidential palace. Of major interest in this area is the Statue of the
Unknown Slave (Le Maron Inconnu) blowing a conch shell which was to herald
the revolution, the Musée du Panthéon (MUPANAH) where one can see many
historical relics including the anchor of the Santa Maria and Toussaint
Louverture's gold pocket-watch. For art lovers, the Musée d'Art Haïtien
has one of Haiti's finest naïve art collections, and Sainte Trinité
Episcopal Cathedral has impressive biblical murals. Further along the rue
Capois, stands the famous gingerbread Oloffson
Hotel, setting for Graham
Greene's novel The Comedians.

Of special interest to wildlife enthusiasts, is Lake
Saumatre, located at the eastern end of the
Cul de Sac, heading towards the
Dominican Republic. The principal road from
Croix-des-Bouquets hugs the southern side of the lake, leading to the most
commonly used border crossing at Malpasse. However, in order to observe
the more than 100 species of waterfowl, flamingoes and crocodiles, the
northern side of the lake is better, taking RN 3 towards Mirebalais,
forking right at Thomazeau.

Driving up into the hills of Petionvillle one finds
various hotels, bars, boutiques and excellent restaurants. Take the scenic
Kenscoff road, head into the mountains and breathe the cool, refreshing
air. From Boutillier, one has a panoramic view of the city and further up
in Fermathe, visit
Fort Jacques and Fort
Alexandre, built in the early
1800's to ward of the French. Before heading to Kenscoff, a charming
mountain town with an open market every Friday, stop at the Baptist
Mission for fresh bread, fruits and vegetables as well as a visit to their
miniature zoo. For real adventure and off road exploration continue into
the mountains and experience Furcy, where the people are warm and
friendly, the earth is red, the hills are verdant with terraced vegetation
and the wind carries the pungent odor of pine trees.

There are no good beaches in Port-au-Prince, but driving
approx. 60 miles north of the capital on RN 1 along the seaboard is the
Côte des Arcadins. This 20-km stretch of coast has sandy beaches,
excellent scuba diving and snorkeling. Nestled among private beach houses
are several lovely hotels: Kyona Beach, Kaliko Beach, Ouanga Bay, Wahoo
Beach, Moulin Sur Mer, which hosts a colonial museum, and Club Med. For
more adventurous snorklers and scuba divers, sailboats leave from
Montrouis, crossing to Anse-à-Galets
on La Gonâve Island.
To reach the beaches of Grande-Goâve,
Petit-Goâve and
the port city of Miragoâne, head W on RN1 past
Carrefour, once outside the city, the
coastal drive is pleasant.
