Considered one of the prettiest cites in Haiti, Jacmel
is situated on a
horseshoe bay. During the late 19th century, this charming port city was
home to wealthy coffee merchants. Influenced by the gracious mansions of
New Orleans, the architecture of the city boasted, cast-iron pillars and
balconies purchased in France. Today, many of these homes are now artisan
shops that sell vibrant handicrafts, papier-mâché masks and carved-wood
animal figures. In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the
once flourishing cigar and coffee industries. Increased interest in Jacmel
is encouraging local nightlife. Yakimo Bar has live bands and dancing.
During the month of February, Jacmel hosts a lively
Carnival celebration complete with costumes, parades and dancing in the
streets.

Outside of town, along the newly paved road, are some of
the South East's most picturesque beaches: Cyvadier, a tiny cove where the
water is bioluminescent certain times a year, Raymond-les-Bains, a
road-side beach, and Ti
Mouillage, where one can rent charming beach
houses. Exercise caution in the water, there is a powerful undertow.
Jump in you 4WD vehicle and head to Bassin
Blue. This
series of deep natural pools and waterfalls can be reached by foot or
horseback. The last km is somewhat steep, and at one point the aid rope is
necessary. Fix a price for the horse and guide before leaving
Jacmel is well worth the 2-3 hour excursion.

In order to gaze on an amazing view of Jacmel and the
bay, a 4WD can climb the rugged road past Marigot up into the mountains of
Seguin. Climb past lunar shaped-boulders and rolling green hills to reach
an excellent auberge in Seguin where you can enjoy marvelous food and good
accommodations. There are also healthy, well-kept horses to rent. Make
sure to visit Morne La Visite National
Park. This mountainous park is home
to Pic La Selle, Haiti's tallest mountain at 2,680m.
