Smallest of the nine departments, the
North East
is where Columbus'
flagship, the Santa Maria, sank on Christmas Day, 1492. Legend has it that
Columbus was well received by the Taino Chief, Guacanagarí. Of major
interests to Columbus and his men were the gold ornaments that adorned the
peaceful Indians' bodies. The Spaniards were unable to search for the
source of the gold, for their ship foundered on a reef. Planning to
return, Columbus built the fort La Navidad with the wood from the wreck to
house the men unable to crowd onto La Niña. Archeologists have searched
in vain for traces of the shipwreck, however American William H. Hodge is
credited with having found La Navidad while digging at
Caille Brûlée.
Nearby, searchers from the Florida Museum of Natural History have
excavated what is believed to be the residence of Chief Guacanagarí. Some
of these Indian relics may be found at the Hodges Museum in Limbe (see
North).

Located approximately 50 km east of Cap Haïtien on RN 6
is the picturesque town of Fort
Liberté. This French-designed town faces
a gorgeous bay, where one can reach many forts by boat, the most famous
being Fort Dauphin, built in 1732.
A pleasant drive SE, continuing on RN6 is
Ounaminthe.
This town is the North's chief border crossing to the Dominican town of Dajabón. The bridge that crosses the
River Massacre into the Dominican
Republic is bustling with moneychangers, motoconchos, and merchants
selling their wares.
