Cap Haïtien, Haiti's second largest city is best known for The Citadelle and Sans Souci Palace. The capital during the colonial period, it was called Cap Français and considered the "Paris of the Antilles" due to its wealth, commerce and European influence. The colony's biggest port, it was the center of the northern plain, then the biggest sugar producing region. Destroyed twice by fire, Christophe set the city aflame in 1802 in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of the French. Forty years later, half the population was lost in an earthquake. In addition to seeing incredible art, and local color, visit Toussaint Louverture Park, where a commemorative statue stands to the general and to the slave insurrection at Vertieres.

La Citadelle, built by King Henri Christophe took fifteen years to build (1805-1820) and cost the lives of over 20,000 people. Perched on Pic La Ferrière (900 meters high), one can see Cuba on a clear day. King Christophe, the royal family, its court and 5,000 soldiers could have held out against the French for a year. The French never came, therefore the cannonballs are still pilled up, intact, and a beautiful job has been done restoring the two century old fortress, considered by many to be the eight wonder of the world.

Sans Souci, which translates into "No Worries" was the royal palace and much more. Located at Milot, below the Citadelle, Sans Souci was the administrative capital. Among other facilities, it included a printing shop, garment factory, hospital, chapel and barracks.

After Christophe shot himself in the heart with a silver bullet, Sans Souci was ransacked. Sadly, it was ruined in the 1842 earthquake.

In order to reach La Citadelle take RN6 south from the Cap to Milot. Once at Milot, you can drive your vehicle to a car park about two thirds of the way up. From there, be prepared for a steep walk. Horses are also available. We suggest you hire a guide to make the trip more interesting, inform you of the history of the monument and aid you in purchasing fruits and coconut water as you hike up the lush path. Agree upon the price before you embark.

Of interest to the northwest of Milot along RN1 is the town of Limbé. Visit the Hodges Museum that houses Indian relics. To the South of Milot, taking RN 3, the caves at Dondon are decorated with heads carved in relief, drawn by the original Indians who inhabited the region. Take advantage of your 4WD and head onto the city of Grand Rivière du Nord to visit Fort Rivière. This famous fortress, built by Columbus, was used by the Cacos, guerrillas who fought valiantly against the US occupation from 1918-1920.

Before heading out of the Cap, make sure to relax at one of the gorgeous beach resorts. A rugged road leads down the coast providing a magnificent view towards Cormier Beach, Rival Beach and further west, Labadie Beach. All three of these resorts provide excellent food, white beaches, water sport equipment, and Labadie welcomes tourist from the Royal Caribbean Lines on Monday and Tuesday. Beyond Labadie lies Belli Beach where one can rent a boat to reach Labadie Village. Hidden at the foot of a cliff, Labadie village has several small hotels.

The North was truly the cradle of the fight for independence. To see Habitation Le Normand de Mezy, the plantation that created rebel slave leader Mackandal, leave the Cap on RN1 towards the Plaine du Nord. In this region, the slaves met in August of 1791 at Bois Caiman under the leadership of the former slave and oungan Boukman to plan the only successful slave revolt in history. During the month of July, voodoo societies from all over the island come to this sacred region to drum and dance.
