In order to explore the Center, we highly suggest a 4WD vehicle. Also, fill the tank with gas in Croix des Bouquet, for stations are few and far between in this region. Follow Route National 3, across the Cul de Sac plain, heading to Croix-des-Bouquet. Take advantage of the photo opportunity of Port-au-Prince as you climb up the steep Morne-à-Cabrit. Continuing North, one reaches Haiti's wettest town Mirebalais. This crossroads town is at the head of the Artibonite Valley. In order to cross the border into the Dominican Republic, turn E on RD305 passing Lascahobas onto the frontier town of Belladère.

To the west of Mirebalais are two sacred sites. The lovely village of Ville Bonheur is home to a church situated on the site where locals reported an appearance of the Virgin Mary in 1884. Thousands of converts make the pilgrimage every July 15th. Hiking a few miles further, many continue on to Saut d'Eau waterfall. Purifying waters descend over a series of shallow pools, formed into mossy shelves. Vodouists light candles and make prayers to the ancient spirits believed to dwell in these blessed waters.

RN3 continues North just past the Peligre hydroelectric damn. Built to provide a source of energy, this damn is now silted and virtually unused.

Heading further into the Central Plateau, one reaches the largest city in the Center, Hinche. Though most of this region is rather barren and parched, north of the city, Bassin Zim, a 20m waterfall provides a refreshing natural swimming pool.
