Follow RN 1 along the coast, past the Arcadins to the historical town of Saint Marc. From here, Haitian soldiers departed to fight in Georgia during the American Civil War. Visit the colonial church and the fine gingerbread houses. Take the highway that crosses at Pont Sondé onto RD 112 to visit Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite, a town built by Christophe overlooking the Artibonite River. Don't miss his Palace of 365 doors or the Fort of Crête-à-Pierrot, where Dessallines fought a crucial battle against Leclerc. Further north, is Marchand, a town that was briefly Dessalines capital city. Stretch your legs and take the short hike into the surrounding hills to visit the seven ruin forts built by Dessalines. There is also a spring with a natural swimming pool. Nearby is the home of Claire Heureuse, Dessalines wife.

Back on the road, heading north on RN 1 is Haiti's third largest city,
Gonaïves. Known as the city of Independence, Dessalines proclaimed victory in 1804. Considering the historical, cultural and spiritual links between Haiti's fight for independence and vodou, it is of no surprise that two of the most sacred sites, Soukri and Souvenance are located near Gonaïves.
